Royce Da 5'9 Sends Playful Jabs At Kanye West, Tory Lanez & Wale In "Field Negro" Single

Royce Da 5’9 has returned with a new self-produced single called “Field Negro.” Over a subdued, jazz-infused beat, the Slaughterhouse vet tackles race in America and shines a spotlight on the plight black people face every day.

In the third verse, Royce throws a playful jab at Kanye West and Wale with, “I did it my way/Without all the complaining and all the whining all day like Kanye and Wale” and in the same breath, reminds Tory Lanez he’s not here for his “cheddar.”

Par for the course, Nickel Nine puts his lyrical dexterity on display for nearly six-minutes while touching on the Colin Kaepernick controversy and the Super Bowl LIII halftime show debate.

“This is what happens when your favorite artist never get challenged/Your favorite felon from the NFL has been silenced/My dad said, ‘Under no circumstance should a man considered a legend have nothing left on his death bed’/And any black man not willin’ to stand up for his rights/Should lose the use of his left and right hand,” he spits.

There’s so much to unpack, it will take a handful of listens to really grasp the impact of Royce’s words.

Listen to “Field Negro” above — on repeat.
